Guaranty Trust Bank plc was incorporated in July 1990, as a private limited liability company wholly owned by Nigerian individuals and institutions. We were licensed as a Commercial Bank in August 1990 and commenced operation in February 1991.
In September 1996, Guaranty Trust Bank plc became a publicly quoted company and won the Nigerian Stock Exchange “President’s Merit” award that same year and again in the years 2000, 2003,2005, 2006 and 2007. The Bank was also runner-up for the quoted company of the year award in 2005. In February 2002, we obtained a Universal Banking licence and were appointed a settlement bank by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2003.
In January 2007, Guaranty Trust Bank plc issued a US$350 million Regulation S Eurobond. This transaction; the first by any Nigerian Bank won the Banker magazine's Transaction of the Year award and exposed indigenous companies to other sources of international capital funding.
In July that same year, the Bank undertook a US$750 million Global Depositary Receipts (GDR) Offering. The listing of the Depositary Receipts on the London Stock Exchange made us the First African Bank and Nigerian Company to be listed on the London Exchange.
Our quest to continue adding value to the businesses of our stakeholders has seen us emerge as a pacesetter and industry leader over the years. This is evident in our introduction of real time online banking in 1990, mobile, telephone and internet banking in 2002, Slip free banking in 2006, the first fully interactive self service call centre; GT Connect in 2006, Drive Through Banking and GTBank on wheels in 2007.
Our bank today is one of Nigeria’s most profitable publicly quoted financial institutions with credible footprints in major West African countries such as Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Also recently, having secured the approval of the Financial Services Authority in the UK, our bank commenced the operations of our UK subsidiary, GTBank UK.
Our strong service culture has aided our operations from 140 strategically located branches in all major commercial cities in Nigeria and also enhanced our commitment to providing professional banking services for various facets of the Nigerian economy.
