Sterling Capital Markets Limited (Sterling Capital) is the investment banking subsidiary of Sterling Bank Plc. Sterling Bank emerged out of a fusion of five banks, following the conclusion of the banking industry consolidation in Nigeria in January, 2006. The constituent banks include Indo-Nigerian Bank Limited, NAL Bank Plc., Magnum Trust Bank Limited, Trust Bank of Africa Limited and NBM Bank Limited.

Though Sterling Capital has only recently been incorporated, its presence in the Nigerian investment banking market precedes its legal existence given the antecedents of the Sterling Group members. NAL Bank Plc was the pioneer merchant bank in Nigeria. It commenced banking operations in Nigeria in 1960 as Nigerian Acceptances Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of John Holt (Liverpool) Limited. In July, 1969, NAL merged its operations with those of Financial Holdings (Nigeria) Limited, then trading under the name of Phillip Hills Nigeria Limited. In November, 1969, NAL became the first Nigerian finance house to be granted a licence to operate as a merchant bank in the country. Today about 50% of the companies quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange had NAL’s imprint either having handled their Initial Public Offers (IPO) or capital issues. Similarly Magnum Trust Bank Plc was a key player in the capital market and a major settlement bank for the Central Security Clearing System, the depository and clearing agent for the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Magnum was the clearing Bank for a significant proportion of Stock Broking firms in Nigeria, trading on the floors of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

The strategic objective of Sterling Capital is to sustain its leadership position in investment banking in Nigeria. In achieving its objective, Sterling Capital will leverage on its strong antecedents in the Nigerian financial services industry in addition to its affiliation to the State Bank of India (SBI), through one of the legacy banks, Indo-Nigerian Bank Limited. SBI is the largest Banking Group in India and ranks among the top 100 in the world. Its strong investment banking subsidiary offers enormous scope for collaboration in offering world class investment banking services.

Currently, Sterling Capital offers a wide spectrum of investment banking services, which includes Corporate Finance, Financial Advisory, Funds/ Portfolio Management as well as Research & Investment Advisory. For more details, please visit our website www.sterlingcapitalng.com.
